ANGELA GRIMSDALE
Chance discoveries are a key theme in Angela's artistic practice. She is interested in the natural processes of the universe, and in particular, the role chance plays in those processes, and how it can also be used in a related way as a generative mechanism in art.
In 1893 the French writer Alfred Jarry invented a new science called ’Pataphysics which is a theory of the workings of the universe focusing on its accidental phenomena. ’Pataphysics turns conventional physics upside down, valuing the irrational and the absurd rather than a belief that we can ever really know the underlying reality of the universe. Angela's art is created within the ’pataphysical tradition by emphasising the role that chance plays in the production of artwork. She is interested in contextualising artwork as evidence of the chance that is inherent in the natural processes of their making.
